Dr. Victor Prieto

Dr. Victor Prieto is a highly respected Pathologist and Dermatopathologist specializing in melanoma. He has been associated with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) since 1999, holding appointments in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology. Dr. Prieto has served as the Fellowship Director of the Dermatopathology Program (2001-2012) and the Surgical Pathology Program (2015-2020). He was also the section chief of the dermatopathology section (1999-2016) and became the Chair of the Department of Anatomical Pathology in 2015.

Dr. Prieto’s expertise extends to his role as Co-Director of the melanoma tissue bank at MDACC, where he has been involved in numerous melanoma projects, both within the institution and in collaboration with renowned organizations like the NCI and SPORE groups. He has conducted research on molecular expression patterns, morphologic predictors of melanoma behavior, and the application of immunotherapies and targeted therapies in melanoma. Dr. Prieto’s contributions also include his involvement in the Blue Book of the WHO on cutaneous neoplasms, advancing diagnostic criteria and classification systems for skin cancer.
